June 3, 2007So we are going a little old school for this time... not really I guess, but it is a bit old. Mark of
Kri is in the bag. I have some mixed feelings over the game. even though its pretty much a first-gen PlayStation 2 game, it looked, and played alright. However the way it plays also hurts the game. Plus, it is
very short. I think I clocked out at just under 6 hours or something... so you really could finish this thing in a sitting if you really wanted to. I did get this game for free though. A friend of mine came over one day and said "Here, do you want this?... I found this just laying on the street and the game was still in it." So yeah... not a bad deal I guess. Plus it had these random glitter stars all over it so... yeah I don't know either. I really need to step up and finish some games before the real next-gen heavy hitters show up, but anyway... lets see what we got.
This is the first game I have played on my PS3 and I was able to take advantage of the
upscaling that became recently available. For a first-gen PS2 game, it looks pretty decent, but there are
alot of boring colors and textures. As you make your way through the game, everything just starts to look the same after a while. Maybe I just so used to the newer games that are out now... or maybe just coming from
Okami, but the graphics are nothing to write home about... although the
upscaling on the PS3 does help. :) It pretty much so-so I guess you could say.
The sound for the most part is pretty forgettable. Having just beating it today, if you asked me to maybe hum a tune or talk about some of the sound effects, I wouldn't even know any. So yeah.... I don't know know what much else to say here. Its pretty much your standard sword slashing and whatever. Voice acting was pretty decent though... although the guy that teaches you how to play the game... huge
LOL. :)
Game play was a little interesting but frustrating at the same time. In order to attack someone, you had to "focus" on them which meant swinging the right analog stick around and then a button appears over the enemies head. You can do this up to three times, so in the end if you had three guys around you, one would have a X above their head, one with a Square, and the other a Circle. You would then just push that button over and over again to attack that person. Later weapons let you select more than one person. It was pretty interesting, but once you get towards the end of the game, the game gets unfair for no reason.
This game gets incredibly cheesy at some points. Like, you would have 20 guys all attacking you at the same time, and it would be impossible to attack with out taking damage. Plus this game has some pretty stupid pop in at the end of the game. I would be attacking somebody, and then all of a sudden out of no where, an enemy spawns RIGHT on top of me. I like a hard game as much as the next person, but its not fun when the game is hard because of how cheesy it is. Lucky the block button block in all directions so you can just hold it down when the action gets heavy, but really... I should have to wait for like 20 seconds before I maybe get a chance to attack.
Overall... I say if you wanna play it, give it a rent or find a friend that has it and just play that. I would not buy this unless you happen to find it for free. There is a sequel to this game called the "Rise of the Kasai" but I don't know if I would want to bother with it. The story really wasn't memorable at all so I think I am just gonna pass on that... unless I just find it sitting on the street. :)
